Research Interests

Since his appointment to UCD, Philip Newsholme has published approximately 50 research papers and reviews and has received approximately 1.6 million Euro in Grant funding as Lead Applicant as well as approximately 1.5 million Euro as a Co-Applicant. Philip Newsholme now leads a team of researchers working on (i) aspects of nutrient, immune and endocrine regulation of pancreatic alpha and beta cell function and integrity (ii) metabolic adaptations to exercise in healthy and diabetic individuals. Philip Newsholme has also collaborated with colleagues in industry including scientists in AstraZeneca (Manchester, U.K.) and Diabetica (Coleraine, N. Ireland).

Philip Newsholme is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal, Clinical Science (Sept 2003 - present) and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Biochemical Journal (Jan 2004 – present).
