Description
Job Title: Research Assistant Metabolic Health, Food for Health Ireland (FHI), University College Cork
Reports To: Programme Leader and CEO, Food for Health Ireland
Salary: RA salary scale, commensurate with experience
Food for Health Ireland (FHI; www.fhi.ie) is seeking a suitably qualified Research Assistant to study the effects of milk derived ingredients on satiety signalling, as part of its metabolic health research programme. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions and as the incidence is increasing, FHI is looking for novel food ingredients that may help in the regulation of appetite. Current pharmacological treatments for obesity are either lacking in efficacy and/or are burdened with adverse side effects, demonstrating the requirement for novel strategies. This research is focused on the modulation of satiety and food intake through the ghrelin 1a receptor (GHS-R1a), which represents a major target in the molecular signaling regulating food intake and energy expenditure. The candidate will be involved in a project focusing on the potential of dairy derived ingredients as appetite suppressants and satiety inducing agents through the modulation of the GHS-R1a receptor.
Food for Health Ireland (FHI) is a multi-location, multi-disciplinary research centre supported by Enterprise Ireland and the Irish dairy industry. The objective is to develop new dairy-derived functional food ingredients and nutritional solutions related to infant development, metabolic function, infection/immunity issues and healthy ageing. The metabolic health programme on weight management is conducted by researchers at University College Cork and Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark. The appointedcandidate will be based at University College Cork.
